Our Stories

Student Narratives

These are the stories of commitment, compassion, and growth from the student extensionists of Project LOTUS—fondly called LOTUS Warriors. As part of a home-based tutorial initiative, these future educators have reached learners across communities, offering academic support while nurturing hope and resilience. In their own words, they share how the experience shaped not only their teaching skills, but also their values, confidence, and purpose as educators. Through each narrative, the heart of Project LOTUS comes to life—where service meets transformation.

Student Videos

For a LOTUS Warrior, each day begins with purpose. Armed with lesson plans, compassion, and a drive to serve, they step into homes and communities as tutors, mentors, and role models.
Beyond teaching, they listen, adapt, and inspire—helping young learners grow in both knowledge and confidence.

Faculty Narratives

“Our guiding professor’s personal take on Project LOTUS.”

Helping children become independent learners is vital for their development, as it enhances motivation, confidence, and problem-solving skills, preparing them to handle life’s challenges. Parents play a pivotal role in this process by providing opportunities for autonomy, offering guidance, and fostering a supportive environment that encourages self-directed learning.

By actively engaging in their children’s education and promoting independence, parents significantly contribute to their children’s cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioral growth. Reflecting on my experiences at home, discussing this topic with fellow LOTUS parent participants has been enlightening. Raising children with diverse personalities has tested my patience and resolve as a parent. I’ve realized that applying theoretical knowledge in real-life parenting requires creativity and adaptability to make things work effectively at home.

While I emphasized the power of open communication, active listening, and leading by example, hoping to offer practical tools alongside the philosophical underpinnings of raising well-adjusted children, I was touched by their openness on the challenges they confront to build harmony within their homes. This open dialogue transformed the seminar from a lecture into a collaborative exploration, where shared wisdom and mutual encouragement became the most valuable takeaways. Engaging with their thoughtful questions and heartfelt anecdotes in the discussion that followed reinforced the shared commitment in the room, creating a sense of community and mutual support in the challenging yet deeply rewarding journey of parenthood and unconditional love that defines parenthood in Sorsogon City

As I ended my talk, I felt a profound sense of connection to them, a shared understanding of the immense responsibility of parenthood and realized that indeed open communication is not trivial, but, a huge aspect of family harmony. I reckon,  LOTUS 3.0 made that happen to me.

LOTUS 3.0: PARENTS’ EDUCATION RECIPIENT

Meet Annie, a mother and proud graduate of the LOTUS program.

“Hindi ko maiwasang maiyak—hindi sa lungkot, kundi sa galak—kasi ang isang ina na katulad ko, sa tagal ng panahong natabunan (personal na pangarap), may pagkakataon pa pala akong mag-aral.”

Translation (English): “I could not hold back my tears—not from sorrow, but from overwhelming joy—for a mother like me, long buried beneath the weight of time, has been given the opportunity to pursue education once more.”

Annie, 35 (Graduate of the LOTUS 3.0: Parents’ Education for Child-Learning Success, a short term course)

IN FOCUS:
Narrative story from the Main Proponent, Dr. Garcia

Behind every transformative initiative is a story of vision, resilience, and purpose. At Sorsogon State University, one such story unfolds through Project LOTUS—a groundbreaking endeavor conceptualized and led by its Dean of the College of Teacher Education, Dr. Alfonso L. Garcia Jr.

As the project’s main proponent, Dr. Garcia envisioned Project LOTUS not just as a program, but as a catalyst for growth, innovation, and empowerment within the academic community, communities and beyond. Dr. Garcia is supported by the university’s esteemed President Dr. Geraldine F. De Jesus alongside SorSU administration.
