Awards and Recognitions

Sorsogon State University’s College of Teacher Education continues to gain national and regional recognition for its unwavering commitment to excellence in teaching and community engagement. Among its recent distinctions are the Excellence in Quality Assurance in Teacher Education (EQUATE) Award for outstanding performance in both the BEEd and BSEd programs, and the prestigious DSWD Vulcan Award for its flagship extension initiative, Project LOTUS (Localized Tutorial Services).

This program, particularly its LOTUS 3.0: Parents Education for Child Learning Success, has empowered parent-learners through a structured 8-week course. SorSU also earned accolades from the Department of Education Region V for its impactful literacy programs and its tutors’ participation in Brigada Pagbasa. Notably, faculty leaders Dr. Alfonso Garcia Jr. and Prof. Susan Jamoralin were both recognized as Outstanding Extensionists of the Year. Student achievements include top honors in regional competitions and recognition as Outstanding Student Teachers of Bicol, underscoring the university’s mission to transform lives through quality education and meaningful service.

Excellence in Quality Assurance in Teacher Education (EQUATE) Award

Sorsogon State University was recognized as a top performing Teacher Education Institution for both the Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) and the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd programs) and also received the TEI with Dual Awards. This recognition solidifies SorSU’s standing as one of the leading Teacher Education Institutions in the country, demonstrating unparalleled commitment to maintaining the highest standard in delivery pre-service teacher education programs.

DSWD Vulcan Award for social development and public service initiatives to vulnerable sector

Sorsogon State University received the Vulcan Award in recognition of its valuable contribution to DSWD along with its unwavering support to achieve the department’s endeavors in providing social welfare and development. Central to this award is the College of Teacher Education’s LOTUS 3.0 Parents Education for Child Learning Success, an 8-week short-term course under its flagship extension Project LOTUS (Localized Tutorial Services).

DepEd Region V Recognition to SorSU for the Successful Implementation of Its Literacy Programs

Sorsogon State University complements DepEd’s literacy mission by serving as a hub of expertise, innovation, and community engagement. With Project LOTUS, the university becomes a strong ally of the Department of Education in its implementation of Regional Brigada Eskwela (School Brigade) and Project 6B that both aim to address the learning poverty in the country.

DepEd Region’s Recognition to Volunteer Tutor 

The Department of Education Region V recognized the meaningful contribution of Project LOTUS tutors who participated in the implementation of Brigada Pagbasa Program (National Reading Brigade). One of the awardees is Rachel Dulpina, a College of Teacher Education student who was also awarded as Volunteer Tutor of the Year and Best Portfolio Writer.

Outstanding Extensionist of the Year

In 2024, Project LOTUS leader Dr. Alfonso L. Garcia Jr. bags the Outstanding Extensionist of the Year award for his substantial contribution in the advancement of Sorsogon State University’s extension and community engagement initiatives. As the Dean of the college, this further shows his exemplary commitment to community engagement, innovative extension work, and sustainable impact in education and development.

Extensionist of the Year

In the same year, Project LOTUS assistant leader Susan A Jamoralin was awarded Extensionist of the Year for her substantial contribution in the advancement of Sorsogon State University’s extension and community engagement initiatives.

Best Extension Paper

During the In-House Review of completed Research and Extension Projects in January 2025, Project LOTUS was awarded the Best Extension Paper. With the project’s third phase with participants from 4Ps (conditional cash transfer program of the Philippine government under the Department of Social Welfare and Development) beneficiaries, the parent participants are provided a short-term course to better understand their children and help in the child’s learning success.

Best Instructional Innovative Design

College of Teacher Education student, Christine Faye Garcia, who handles tutorials with learners in the local church was awarded Best Instructional Innovative Design in the 3rd Regional Virtual Demonstration Teaching Competition in 2022.

Outstanding Student Teachers of Bicol

Christine Faye L. Garcia, a Bachelor of Special Needs Education volunteer tutor who believes that “Touching lives is the greatest service to mankind” finds joy in teaching kids as it provides a horizon of new opportunities and gives her a passionate heart to teach diverse children. In 2024, Kiarra Quenzelle D. Belleca, a Bachelor of Secondary Education student and LOTUS warrior achieved a remarkable recognition as she was named the 1st in the rank of Ten Outstanding Student Teachers of Bicol in the Secondary Category.
