Our Impact
Project LOTUS is a home-based tutorial initiative spearheaded by the faculty and students of the Teacher Education program. While tutoring has long been a common practice among students even before the pandemic, the rise of modular and flexible learning created a greater demand for academic support. In response, Project LOTUS was formally established to extend the reach of tutoring services across all programs in the College, thereby serving more learners in need.
Over its four years of implementation, Project LOTUS has served a total of 16,732 tutees. Our 3,268 student extensionists have contributed a combined total of 669,280 service hours. Using a minimum rate of ₱150 per hour for non-licensed tutors, the estimated economic value of this contribution amounts to ₱100,392,000.00 or 1,801,593.57 USD.
The impact of tutoring through Project LOTUS goes far beyond academic improvement. It fosters personal growth among tutees by building their confidence, independence, and love for lifelong learning. Through the use of customized instructional materials, tutees also develop adaptive and manipulative skills. The values of patriotism and environmental stewardship are likewise integrated into the sessions. Children are taught the importance of protecting the environment, instilling a sense of responsibility from a young age.
Environmental Advocacy

In support of environmental advocacy, LOTUS tutors—also known as “LOTUS Warriors”—have participated in tree and mangrove planting activities. These efforts contribute to both immediate and long-term positive outcomes, including heightened environmental awareness, behavioral change, critical thinking, and community involvement.
Moreover, the project has a transformative effect on the tutors themselves. Beyond enhancing their academic competence, it nurtures emotional intelligence, strengthens character, and fosters meaningful personal growth through real-life teaching experiences and community engagement.
Training parents about the nature of their children—such as their developmental stages, learning styles, emotional needs, and behavioral patterns—has a powerful and lasting impact on both family dynamics and a child’s overall development. Parents who are well-informed become more confident in their decisions and more effective in supporting their children’s education, reinforcing positive habits, and encouraging healthy peer relationships. Furthermore, a deeper understanding of child behavior helps prevent common misinterpretations—such as mistaking age-appropriate energy for disobedience—enabling parents to provide more appropriate, empathetic support.
Generally, Project LOTUS has a significant effect on community development as it contributes to the growth of both individuals and the community as a whole. Project LOTUS has proven to help improving education in the province of Sorsogon. It helps raise academic achievement, especially among disadvantaged or at-risk learners.
